Freestanding Fibreglass Pools

Entirely above ground — no retaining walls, no backfill.

Freestanding Bayside Plunge fibreglass pool installed above ground in a courtyard

A Bayside freestanding pool is built to sit above the ground rather than in a hole, so it suits sections where an in-ground pool will not work. Every pool in the range can be converted to freestanding — you choose the size and shape that suits your site. The most popular is The Plunge (5.5 × 2.8 m), and the same shell is available in 4 × 2.4 m.

01 — Above Ground, On Purpose

Why a Freestanding Pool Is Different

A freestanding pool is not an in-ground pool with the hole left out. It is a Bayside shell designed and manufactured to be entirely above ground, engineered and built without the need for any backfill — so there are no retaining walls to build and no spoil to truck away. That changes what your site has to provide. Where an in-ground pool needs a dig, a clean base and somewhere for the fill to go, a freestanding pool is set and finished in place. It is the answer for tight access, steep or rocky ground, a high water table, a rental or cross-lease section, or any backyard where the machinery simply cannot get to the back. And because every pool in the range can be converted, choosing freestanding does not mean giving up the shape you actually want.

What Comes With a Freestanding Install

The same install standard as our in-ground pools, set up for above-ground.

  • Supply and installation of the freestanding pool shell
  • Supply and installation of the standard filtration system
  • Supply and install of a new tri-chlor feeder (upgrade to a sanitizer if you prefer)
  • Concrete pool copings — 550 × 220 mm, bonded with epoxy and silicone sealed to the pool edge
  • Pool lighting, heating, covers and rollers available as options
  • Manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839

Copings and finish

Copings cover the fibreglass edge of the pool and give the surround a clean finish. Bayside bonds them with epoxy glue, grouts between copings and seals the coping-to-pool edge with clear silicone for a seamless look.

Good to know

A freestanding pool is mounted differently from an in-ground pool, so if you want a cover and roller we will talk through how you want it mounted. Fencing consent is required for every pool installation, whatever size it is.

Aesthetics Without the Earthworks

A freestanding pool is a feature in its own right.

Superior Comfort, Lasting Build

Step into a Bayside shell and the difference is immediate: a smooth, non-abrasive surface that is comfortable to sit and stand on, where a rough concrete surface would leave swimmers scraped.

  • Entirely above ground — no retaining walls, no backfill
  • Smooth polished gel coat finish, easy to keep clean
  • Non-abrasive surface that is kind on kids and knees
  • Manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838, installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839
  • 20-year structural warranty, 15 years on the OSMOSIS surface
  • Made in New Zealand, installed nationwide

Consent, Fencing & What Your Site Decides

How much paperwork a freestanding pool involves comes down to the size you choose — and that is part of the job we do with you.

The 35,000 litre line decides it — and Bayside handles the rest

The threshold that matters is 35,000 litres. A pool under it is exempt work under Schedule 1 of the Building Act — no consent application and no Producer Statement required. The freestanding sizes here sit under that line: the Plunge holds 16,150 litres and the Pause around 9,300 litres, so a freestanding conversion of either is exempt work. Choose a larger shell in the range and the pool goes over the line, at which point building consent applies and the work is inspected — and Bayside manages that process for you: the site-specific design for your property, the paperwork that goes with it, and the install sequence so nothing holds anything else up.

A pre-engineered Producer Statement comes standard on consented work

Where consent applies, Bayside supplies a standard, pre-engineered Producer Statement (PS1) for the shell, signed off by our Chartered Professional Engineers — so you get a structurally certified pool without having to go and find an engineer yourself. Your install still needs a site-specific design, because every backyard is different: ground conditions, access, setback and landscaping all change the answer. That is something we take care of end to end, so it is one less thing to worry about.

Every Bayside shell is built to the same standard

Every shell, consented or not, is manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 — swimming pools: premoulded fibre-reinforced plastics, design and fabrication — and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839, its installation companion. Together they set out the layers a shell must be built from and how it must be set. Pool fencing requirements still apply regardless of size (Building Code clause F9), and because fencing consent is required for every pool installation, the fence is part of the plan from the start rather than something bolted on afterwards.

What sits outside a standard installation — and what your site decides

Every Bayside quote covers the pool and a standard installation. Beyond that, some works fall outside our standard pool-installation scope and are charged at our standard hourly or fixed rates — contact us for a bespoke price rather than a guess. The usual ones: special landscaping requests; raising or lowering ground levels; preparing grounds for concrete; supply and installation of topsoil and ready-lawn preparation; removal and disposal of rubbish or unwanted items in and around the pool area; removal of trees within the proposed pool area; relocating any underground obstructions such as stormwater, soakrings or wiring; and miscellaneous works not listed elsewhere. Two things worth knowing up front: delivery is to the bottom of your driveway, on the back of a large truck, so if your site needs a crane or a hiab to place the shell that is arranged at quoting rather than improvised on the day. And while Bayside takes the utmost care not to damage any property, we use heavy machinery and do not guarantee that driveways or property will be untouched. Your local installer prices your property before anything is committed.

Freestanding Pool Questions

The practical answers, the ones about how a freestanding pool is built, and a few you were actually wondering about.

What is a freestanding pool?

A pool that sits entirely above the ground instead of in a hole. Bayside designs and manufactures pools that are entirely above ground, engineered and built without the need for any backfill — so no retaining walls are involved.

Why would I choose freestanding over an in-ground pool?

It solves the sites a dig cannot. There are no retaining walls to build and no backfill, so the work is set and finished rather than excavated and trucked away. That makes it the practical answer for tight access, steep or rocky ground, a high water table, or a backyard the machinery cannot reach. If you cannot have an in-ground pool, you are not limited to one shape either — every pool in the range can be converted.

Which sizes can be freestanding?

All of our pools can be converted into freestanding pools. The most common freestanding pool is The Plunge at 5.5 × 2.8 m, and the same pool is available at 4 × 2.4 m.

How deep is a freestanding pool?

One depth, the whole way: 1.45 m. Bayside publishes depth as shell height — measured on the shell itself, from the top of the shell down to the base, as dimensioned on the engineering drawing — not the modelled water level, so the figure matches your specification sheet exactly. There is no shallow end and no deep end, which means you can stand anywhere in the pool.

How much water does it hold?

The Plunge holds 16,150 litres and the Pause roughly 9,300 litres. Both sit well below the 35,000 litre line that triggers a building consent.

Do I still need a fence and consent?

Fencing consent is required for every pool installation, whatever size it is — that is Building Code clause F9 and it does not change because the pool sits above ground. Whether the pool needs building consent comes down to volume: under 35,000 litres is exempt work under Schedule 1 of the Building Act, which covers both the Plunge and the Pause. Choose a larger shell in the range and it goes over the line, so building consent applies — and Bayside manages that for you.

Do I need a crane or special access?

Delivery and placement depend on your site. The shell arrives on the back of a large truck and is delivered to the bottom of your driveway; if your site needs a crane or a hiab to place it, that is arranged at quoting rather than improvised on the day. Tell us about access when you enquire and we will work it through with your local installer.

How is it installed, and how long does it take?

There is no long and disruptive construction process: a freestanding pool is set and finished rather than excavated and backfilled, so you are in the water sooner than a comparable in-ground build. Access is planned before the job starts — where the truck stops, where the shell gets placed and how it is lifted into position — and your local installer runs the installation and commission.

What comes with a freestanding install?

The freestanding pool shell, the standard filtration system, a new tri-chlor feeder (upgrade to a sanitizer if you prefer), and concrete pool copings at 550 × 220 mm bonded with epoxy and silicone sealed to the pool edge. Pool lighting, heating, covers and rollers are available as options.

Can I fit a cover and roller?

Yes — but a freestanding pool is mounted differently from an in-ground pool, so we will talk through how you want the cover mounted before you commit. Covers and rollers are an option on every pool we install.

Can it be heated, and is it a lot to run?

Yes — the pools are heat pump compatible, and the volume is on your side. The Plunge at 16,150 litres is the sort of body of water a heat pump brings up to temperature and then holds without straining. What a full system costs to run depends on your region, the equipment you fit and how reliably the cover goes back on, so heating is priced by your local installer for your property rather than by us.

Can Q360 in-floor cleaning be added?

Q360 in-floor cleaning can be added to compatible Bayside models, and it is the option most owners ask about because it removes the vacuuming from the weekly routine. Ask your local installer to confirm compatibility and what it adds to your install.

Do the pools need much maintenance?

The smooth polished gel coat finish means there are no joins or crevices for algae and dirt to cling to, and copings protect the pool edge. The routine is skimming, checking the sanitiser and keeping the filter clear. An optional in-floor cleaning system keeps the water clear without manual vacuuming.

What standard is a Bayside shell built to?

Shells are manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 — swimming pools: premoulded fibre-reinforced plastics, design and fabrication — and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839, its installation companion. Every shell is built in our Whakatāne factory rather than shipped in, and is inspected and signed off at each stage: lay-up, curing, gelcoat and finish.

How thick are the shells?

It varies by location, deliberately. Walls, floor, steps and corners each carry different loads, so each is laminated to suit. As a guide, wall laminates run around 7–9 mm while corners and steps run 12–15 mm, because that is where the loads concentrate.

Where We Install Freestanding Pools

Bayside pools are installed through a nationwide dealer network. Ask about the dealer in your region.

Auckland

Above-ground is often the answer in Auckland, where the constraint is rarely space and usually access — side yards, retained ground and a shell that has to reach the back of the site. A freestanding pool removes the excavation and the retaining work from that equation, and the Plunge at 5.5 × 2.8 m still leaves room for paving and planting.

Tauranga & Bay of Plenty

Every Bayside shell is moulded in our Whakatāne factory, so a Bay of Plenty install is a short run from the mould it came out of. Around Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa, coastal sand and variable ground are what shape the work — and a freestanding pool takes the dig out of the conversation entirely.

Hamilton & the Waikato

Waikato buyers tend to ask about running costs first, and a small volume answers that straight away: 16,150 litres is quick for a correctly sized heat pump to bring up to temperature and hold through a Waikato winter. A freestanding pool also suits the larger lifestyle sections where the pool is going somewhere the machinery would rather not go.

Wellington

Windy, terraced and often tight, Wellington is the region a freestanding pool was made for. Where an in-ground pool means smaller diggers, retaining and a crane over the fence, an above-ground shell sidesteps most of it — and the smooth fibreglass finish means the maintenance routine does not become a weekend job.

Christchurch & Canterbury

Shells travel to the South Island on the ferry run and arrive as they left Whakatāne. Delivery is to the bottom of your driveway on a large truck, so a crane or hiab on the Canterbury side is arranged up front rather than discovered on the day. From there the build runs to the same shell standard as every Bayside pool.

Northland & Kerikeri

Far North summers stretch the swim season at both ends, and coastal air and sandy or variable ground are normal up here. A freestanding pool suits sections where a dig is difficult or where the ground would need retaining, and it is priced on your site rather than on an assumption.

Hawke’s Bay & Napier

Hawke’s Bay does long, dry summers and a lot of outdoor living, and a freestanding pool is a feature in its own right — copings and a coping surround rather than a hole in the lawn. The full-length bench on the Plunge is where the adults end up.

Gisborne & the East Coast

Gisborne and Tairāwhiti pools come up the road from our Whakatāne factory, and East Coast sections vary from roomy to tight. A freestanding pool is the straightforward answer where access is limited, and it is assessed on your site before a machine is booked.

South Auckland

Manukau, Papakura, Pukekohe and the wider Counties area run on infill and cross-lease sections, where every metre has to justify itself and access is often the deciding factor. A freestanding Plunge takes the excavation out of the job and still gives you a real 5.5 × 2.8 m pool with a full-length bench.
