Three Parts of the Same Shell
ChlorShield is one of three technologies that go into a Bayside pool. One is the structure, one is the surface, one is built into the floor.
ToughShell Tech™ — the shell
The moulded fibreglass body: gelcoat, corrosion barrier, structural laminate, the reinforcing core and ribs, a polyester layer over the core, and the flow coat. Everything else is fitted to it.
ChlorShield™ — the surface
The chemical- and UV-resistant technology on the swimming side of the shell. It is what holds the colour and the gloss against New Zealand sun and pool chemistry.
Q360 — the floor
Self-cleaning built into the shell at the factory. Recessed jets sweep the floor and drive debris to the skimmer, so nobody has to vacuum.
Gelcoat is the first layer of the build
- 1. Gelcoat — the coloured surface you swim against, finished with ChlorShield on a Bayside shell.
- 2. Corrosion barrier — the resin-rich layer behind the gelcoat, standing between your shell and osmotic blistering.
- 3. Structural glass laminate — the body of the shell that carries the water load and the ground pushing back.
- 4. Coremat core and ribs — the layer that makes a wall stiff rather than just thick.
- 5. Glass over the Coremat — three spray passes and a coat over the top, so the core is fully encapsulated.
- 6. Flow coat — the outer layer that seals the laminate against ground moisture.
A Pool Colour Is a Gelcoat
A fibreglass pool’s colour is not paint and it is not a liner. It is the gelcoat — the coloured surface layer bonded to the shell itself — which is why picking a colour and picking the surface system are the same decision.
- White Knight — soft baby-blue water with a sunlit shimmer.
- Ghost Grey — cool grey water with a turquoise edge in the sun.
- Beach Blue — a true, honest blue, the classic pool look.
- Blue Night — deep sapphire water, the most dramatic finish.
- Champagne Sand — new for this season, a beach-sand water tone.
Any gelcoat colour goes on any model, so the colour you choose is not tied to a shape or a size. Four of the five colours have installed pools on file; Champagne Sand is new, so that one shows the actual gelcoat sample until the first pools in it are built.
How to Look After a ChlorShield Surface
The surface system does its job; water balance does the rest. This is what our own maintenance guidance says matters most on a fibreglass pool.
A soft brush, every time
A quick scrub once a week with a brush made for fibreglass lifts the film that settles in the corners, on the steps and along the waterline. Use a soft nylon brush; never a steel or abrasive one on a gelcoat finish.
Watch pH and calcium
High calcium together with high pH is the single biggest cause of a dull, discoloured or scaled gelcoat on a fibreglass pool. Our fibreglass-specific guidance is 150–200 ppm of calcium, kept at the low end.
If it ever goes dull or chalky
Long-term high pH and calcium, or cleaning with something abrasive, are the usual causes. Water test, bring the pH down, and stop using anything abrasive — a soft brush only, ever.

What is ChlorShield?
It is our signature high-performance gelcoat system — the coloured, protective surface layer bonded to the shell, and the part you see and touch. Do pool colours fade in New Zealand conditions?
That is the question a surface system exists to answer. ChlorShield is UV-resistant and has been tested against extreme chlorine, high pH and elevated temperatures, and it stayed bright, glossy and intact. Strong New Zealand sun is hard on any finish, so it is the right question to ask. Keep the water balanced and it holds its colour far longer.
How does the panel test work?
Panels are tested far beyond normal pool use, side by side with a standard gelcoat, and shown above the waterline and below it. Our own test artwork puts ChlorShield and a standard gelcoat through the same panel run, and it records that the ChlorShield panel stayed bright, glossy and intact.
Does the colour I pick change the surface system?
No. Colour goes into the gelcoat, so any of our five colours — White Knight, Ghost Grey, Beach Blue, Blue Night and Champagne Sand — can be ordered on any model, and the surface system behind them is the same ChlorShield gelcoat.
How do I look after a ChlorShield surface?
Keep the water balanced and use a soft nylon brush — never steel or anything abrasive on a gelcoat. High calcium together with high pH is the single biggest cause of a dull, discoloured or scaled gelcoat, so keep calcium low (150–200 ppm on a fibreglass pool) and keep pH in range. A dull or chalky finish is usually those two things, or an abrasive cleaner.
Can a ChlorShield surface be repaired?
Yes, and that is one of the real advantages of fibreglass: gelcoat damage is repaired by colour-matching the surface, and laminate damage can be cut back and re-laminated. Be aware that a repair may not match the factory shade exactly.
Where is a ChlorShield pool made?
Every Bayside shell is moulded in our own factory in Whakatane, and ChlorShield is the gelcoat layer on the swimming side of that shell. Pools are installed through our own trained installer network, nationwide.
