Plunge — 5.5m × 2.8m

More room to move, without losing the plunge.

Plunge 5.5m x 2.8m fibreglass pool with full-length bench and curved corner entry

A 5.5 by 2.8 metre rectangle with one 1.45 m depth from end to end. The Plunge is the pool for adults who want to walk out the door, step in, and be genuinely cool in ten seconds — no shallow shelf to warm up, no deep end nobody uses. The extra length over our compact Pause gives you space to stretch out, a full-length bench runs one side for sitting and talking, and two curved treads turn you gently into the water at the corner. Under 35,000 litres, so it heats quickly and the consent paperwork simply does not exist.

Cool Off, Properly

The Plunge is the pool adults use on the average Tuesday, not just in January.

Room to Stretch Out

An expanded take on our compact Pause model — real plunge-pool intimacy with the length added back in, so stretching out, floating and moving about all feel natural.

One Bench, Full Length on the Plunge fibreglass pool

One Bench, Full Length

A single continuous bench runs the length of one side of the shell, from the entry steps to the far wall — for lounging, for supervising, and for the easiest way in and out of the water.

Curved Corner Entry

Two curved treads turn you into the water at the corner, with the entry offset 520 mm off the shell edge. Softer to look at than a ladder, and far gentler underfoot.

01 — One Depth, End to End

Why the Plunge Is Different

Most pools this shape hedge their bets: a shallow shelf at one end, a deep end at the other, and water in the middle nobody stands in. The Plunge does not. A single 1.45 m shell height runs the whole 5.5 by 2.8 m footprint, so every part of the pool is somewhere you can be — standing, treading, or sitting on the bench with the water at your shoulders. The volume is modest enough to heat properly, which is why this is the pool people use most days.

Plunge — Built for Depth, Not Distance

The Plunge does exactly what a plunge pool is for: it takes you from hot and bothered to properly cool in the time it takes to walk out the door. The longer shell means you can stretch out, float, or move about without the water feeling like a bucket, and the bench keeps the conversation in the pool rather than back on the deck. It suits couples and adults who want the water itself, not the laps and not the upkeep.

  • Single 1.45 m depth end to end (shell height) — no shelf, no wasted shallow end
  • Full-length bench along one side of the shell
  • Curved corner entry — two curved treads, entry offset 520 mm
  • 5.5 × 2.8 m footprint — an expanded take on the compact Pause
  • Under 35,000 litres — no building consent, no PS1
  • A modest water volume that heats fast and holds its temperature
  • Heat pump compatible, and Q360 in-floor cleaning can be added
  • Manufactured in New Zealand, installed nationwide

No Building Consent. No PS1. No Paperwork.

The Plunge sits under the 35,000 litre threshold, so most of the usual pool admin simply does not apply.

Exempt work under Schedule 1 — no building consent

Under 35,000 litres the Plunge is exempt work under Schedule 1 of the Building Act. There is no building consent to apply for, no Producer Statement to chase, and no engineer for you to engage. That is not a shortcut, it is simply what the rules say for a pool this size. Exempt from consent is not exempt from standard: every Plunge shell is manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838, the design and fabrication standard for premoulded fibreglass swimming pools, and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839. Pool fencing requirements still apply (Building Code clause F9), and your local installer will walk you through the fence rules for your property.

A standard dig-out is included — your installer confirms your site

Every Bayside quote includes a standard excavation. What varies beyond that is your ground: how easily machinery reaches the backyard, whether excavated fill has to be trucked away, whether stormwater, soakrings or wiring sit in the way, and whether the shell has to be craned over a fence or the house. At 5.5 × 2.8 m the Plunge is one of the easier shells to crane and set on a tight site. Your local installer prices your property before anything is committed — so there are no surprises once the digger arrives.

What sits outside a standard installation

These works fall outside our standard pool-installation scope and are priced separately: special landscaping requests; raising or lowering ground levels; preparing grounds for concrete; topsoil and ready-lawn preparation; removal and disposal of rubbish or unwanted items in and around the pool area; removal of trees within the proposed pool area; relocation of any underground obstructions such as stormwater, soakrings or wiring; and miscellaneous works not listed elsewhere. We install pools nationwide, but full landscaping packages — fencing, concrete, retaining walls — are only available within specific service areas. One thing worth knowing up front: we are careful with driveways and property, but there is heavy machinery on the job and a drive can get marked. Tell us early what your access is like and we will plan the lift around it.

Plunge Frequently Asked Questions

The practical answers, and a few you were actually wondering about.

How big is the Plunge?

5.5 m long, 2.8 m wide, with a full-length bench along one side. That is a deliberate step up from our compact Pause at 4 × 2.4 m: the same idea with the length back in, so you can stretch out, and the width back in so two people are not negotiating for space.

How deep is it, and is it one depth throughout?

One depth, the whole way: 1.45 m. Bayside publishes depth as shell height — measured on the shell itself, top of the shell down to the base, as dimensioned on the engineering drawing — not the modelled water level, so the figure here matches your specification sheet exactly.

How much water does it hold?

16,150 litres, which keeps the Plunge below the 35,000 litre consent threshold. That threshold is the figure that decides whether a consent is needed, and the exact volume is published here — ask us and we will put the modelled volume for your shell in writing.

Does the Plunge need building consent?

No — and it does not need a Producer Statement either. Under 35,000 litres the Plunge is exempt work under Schedule 1 of the Building Act: no consent application, no PS1, no engineer to engage. It is still built to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839, and pool fencing requirements still apply.

Will it suit my medium or urban backyard?

That is exactly what it was drawn for. At 5.5 × 2.8 m it fits medium outdoor areas and stylish urban settings, and it leaves room for paving, planting and the part of the yard the dog has plans for. Send photographs or measurements and we will tell you honestly whether it fits and whether the digger can get in.

How is it installed?

The shell is delivered and set by your local installer, with a standard excavation included. Access is planned before the dig starts — where the truck stops, where the digger goes, where the spoil goes, and how the shell gets from the street to the hole. At 5.5 × 2.8 m the Plunge is one of the more forgiving shells to crane over a fence.

What can change on my site?

A standard dig-out is included in your quote. Beyond that, what varies is your ground: how easily machinery reaches the backyard, how far excavated fill has to be trucked, whether stormwater, soakrings or wiring are in the way, and whether the shell has to be craned over a fence or the house. Landscaping, ground levels, concrete preparation, topsoil and tree removal are all priced separately. Your local installer prices your property before anything is committed.

Can it be heated, and is it a lot to run?

The Plunge is heat pump compatible, and at under 35,000 litres it is the sort of volume a heat pump brings up to temperature and then holds without straining. What a full system costs depends on your equipment package and your location, so your local installer prices it against your property.

Can Q360 in-floor cleaning be added?

Q360 in-floor cleaning can be added to compatible Bayside models, and it is the option most Plunge owners ask about because it removes the vacuuming from the weekly routine. Ask your local installer to confirm compatibility and the equipment package for your install.

What standard is a Bayside shell built to?

Shells are manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 — swimming pools: premoulded fibre-reinforced plastics, design and fabrication — and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839, its installation companion. Together they set the layers a shell must be built from, the loads it has to carry, and the curing and defect requirements before it leaves the factory. We build to them on every pool, consented or exempt.

How is the shell actually built?

By hand, in layers, each with its own job. Working outwards from the water: a coloured gelcoat cosmetic surface; a resin-rich corrosion barrier that keeps water out of the laminate and is what prevents osmotic blistering; the structural glass laminate carrying the loads and holding the shape; core and rib reinforcement stiffening the walls and the top flange; and an outer sealing layer against ground moisture. The swimming surface is finished with ChlorShield, our chemical-resistant surface technology.

How thick are the shells?

It varies by location, deliberately. Walls, floor, steps and corners each carry different loads, so each is laminated to suit. As a guide, wall laminates run around 7–9 mm while corners and steps run 12–15 mm, because that is where the loads concentrate. If you want the layer specification for the Plunge in writing, ask us for it.

Can I see the numbers for my pool?

Yes. Every shell is built in our Whakatane factory with the production data recorded against it — batch numbers, amounts used and thickness sprayed at each layer. Ask for the lay-up details for the Plunge, or for the exact pool you are quoted, and we will put them in writing.

Is this the pool people actually buy?

It is the most straightforward pool in the range to make a decision about, which is why it sells the way it does. 5.5 × 2.8 m, one 1.45 m depth, a full-length bench, under 35,000 litres so no consent no PS1. There is nothing on the spec sheet you have to think your way around.

Do I need to be a swimmer?

No, and that is rather the point. At a single 1.45 m you can stand anywhere in the Plunge. This is a pool for people who want to be in the water rather than train in it — walk in, stand in it, sit on the bench, cool down, get out. If you want lengths, talk to us about a longer model.

Can it handle a long, hot summer of guests?

Comfortably. The bench runs the full 5.5 m, the water is clear of steps and obstacles in the middle, and there is no sharp depth change to catch anyone out. It is the pool that people gravitate to at a barbecue — and 35,000 litres is a volume a heat pump keeps up with.

What will the neighbours say?

Usually the same two things, in this order: “that fits there?” and “when can we come over?” At 5.5 × 2.8 m the Plunge is the quiet achiever of the range — a pool you will genuinely use daily, without the whole backyard given over to it.

Where We Install the Plunge

Bayside pools are installed through a nationwide dealer network. Ask about the dealer in your region.

Auckland

Inner-city Auckland is where the Plunge earns its keep: narrow side access, cross-lease boundaries and yards a family pool will never fit. At 5.5 × 2.8 m it lands where a bigger shell cannot, and the single 1.45 m depth means all the water you heat is water you actually stand in.

Tauranga & Bay of Plenty

Manufactured in Whakatane, so a Plunge bound for Tauranga, Mount Maunganui or the Bay travels the shortest distance it ever will. Humid summers and long evenings straight off the beach are exactly this pool’s brief: chest-deep cool water, a full-length bench, and room for two adults to talk.

Hamilton & the Waikato

Waikato summers get properly hot and the evenings fall away quickly. A pool under 35,000 litres comes up to temperature fast and then holds it, which makes the Plunge the realistic Waikato option for a household that wants to swim most nights.

Wellington

Steep drives, tight fences and hillside sections are the Wellington reality — and exactly why these proportions matter. 5.5 m of shell is an easier lift down a narrow access than a family pool, and one shallow-depth dig means far less spoil to get off the site.

Christchurch & Canterbury

Canterbury’s hot nor’westers are made for cool water, and a plunge pool suits the region’s dry, level, well-fenced sections. The shell crosses to the South Island exactly as it left the factory, and the single 1.45 m depth keeps the excavation and the fencing straightforward.

Northland & Kerikeri

Long, humid Far North summers, coastal sections and clay under the grass. The Plunge’s modest volume makes shoulder-season heating realistic, and the curved corner entry with its 520 mm offset is kind to feet that have been on the beach all day.

Hawke’s Bay & Napier

Hawke’s Bay lives outdoors from November through April, and a plunge pool is the region’s natural fit: cool water for the hot middle of the day, a bench for the long warm evening. It suits the region’s compact town sections too.

Gisborne & the East Coast

Gisborne and the East Coast get serious summer heat with coastal salt in the air year round. The Plunge is built for exactly that: laminated to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 with a resin-rich corrosion barrier, and finished in a chemical-resistant gelcoat surface.

South Auckland

Manukau, Papakura, Pukekohe and the wider Counties area: infill sections, cross-lease yards and households that want the pool to be the easy part of the week. A single 1.45 m depth and a 5.5 × 2.8 m footprint keep the build small and the fencing simple.
