Bayside Pools Christchurch
Tom O’Connell & Zach — a builder and a drainlayer

Bayside Pools Christchurch is led by Tom O’Connell, a licensed builder, together with his business partner Zach, a registered drainlayer. Tom has spent more than thirty years building on Christchurch sections, so the crew that prepares your ground and sets your shell has done this work in this city for a long time. Between the two of them, the structure and the water are both somebody’s job.
Areas we serve
Where Tom & Zach install
Christchurch City and out across the wider Canterbury region. If your section is on the flat, on a slope, on the hill, or behind a narrow drive, the team has almost certainly dug in ground like it before.

About your installer
A builder and a drainlayer, on the same crew
A fibreglass pool install is really a small construction project. You dig to a precise depth in ground that is rarely predictable, build a base that will not settle, hold the levels against the house, sort out where the water goes, place something very heavy on it, and then put the ground back around it. Everything that goes wrong with a pool goes wrong at that stage.
Tom is a licensed builder who has worked on Christchurch sections for more than thirty years. He has spent that time on residential building work across the city and Canterbury, including hillside and difficult-access sites — which is the same problem set a sloping or tight pool section presents.
Zach is his business partner and a registered drainlayer. That matters more than it sounds. Water is what damages pools and their surrounds: groundwater against the shell, surface water running the wrong way, drainage that was never designed for the pool. Having a registered drainlayer on the crew means that side of the job is designed and signed off by the person who is accountable for it, not subcontracted to whoever was available.
The result is a two-person core to the project: one responsible for the structure and the levels, one responsible for the water. Both are on site rather than on the end of a phone.
- Licensed builder with 30+ years on Christchurch sections
- Registered drainlayer as business partner, on the crew
- Experienced with hillside, sloping and tight-access sites
- Used to working with engineers, inspectors and consenting
- Every shell manufactured by Bayside in Whakatāne with a 20-year structural warranty

How it works
Your Christchurch install, step by step
Every section is different, so the order below is the shape of the job rather than a fixed timetable. You will get the real dates for your property in your quote.

1. Site visit and a real quote
We look at your property rather than quoting from a distance. Access, levels, where the services run, where the fence line can go, and how the digger gets in. That is what the quote is built on.

2. Excavation, drainage and the base
The hole is dug, the base is prepared and compacted to suit the shell, and drainage is sorted by a registered drainlayer while the ground is open. This stage is where a pool is won or lost.

3. Shell delivery and set
Your shell arrives from Whakatāne, is lifted into position and levelled. The team checks the levels against the plan before anything is backfilled.

4. Fill, commission and handover
We backfill and brace, start filling, connect the pump, filter and heating, balance the water, and test every system. Then we walk you through the finished pool, the equipment and the ongoing care.

The parts that matter here
What gets done around your pool
On a Christchurch section, most of the risk and most of the cost sits in the work around the shell rather than the shell itself. These are the stages that have to be got right.
Reading the ground
Canterbury is sandy and gravelly near the rivers, heavier clay in places and rock in the hills. The base is built for the ground you actually have.
Water away from the shell
Groundwater and surface water managed so it does not sit against the pool or under the base. Designed by a registered drainlayer.
Levels and fall
Pool height relative to the house, the deck and the boundary, with fall so water runs away rather than toward the pool.
Getting in and out
Driveway width, overhead lines, neighbouring fences and where a truck can stand, worked out before anything is ordered.
Base and backfill
The base carries the pool and the backfill locks it in place. Both are checked against the plan as the job goes.
Fencing and compliance
Pool barriers are a consenting requirement and are planned alongside the pool, not bolted on afterwards.
Track record
What that experience means for your pool
A pool is a big purchase from people you have not met. Here is what thirty years of building on Canterbury ground and a registered drainlayer on the crew actually buys you.
Thirty years on Canterbury ground
Tom has built on Christchurch sections since the early nineties. When the ground does something unexpected, that history is the difference between a fix and a delay.
ExperienceDrainage designed, not improvised
Zach is a registered drainlayer. Groundwater, surface water and the pool overflow are designed properly, which is what protects the shell and the base long term.
WaterHillside and tight access
Sloping sites, hill builds and difficult access are where this team is most comfortable, because that is the work they have done every week.
Hard sitesQuestions
Christchurch fibreglass pool questions
The questions people actually ask before they commit. If yours is not here, ask us.
What ground do you find in Christchurch, and does it matter?
Canterbury is a mixed bag — sandy and gravelly ground close to the rivers, heavier clay in places, and rock in the hills. Each behaves differently when you dig and each needs a different base treatment. This is exactly why we want a site visit before we quote rather than a phone estimate.
Do I need building consent for a fibreglass pool in Christchurch?
It depends on the pool and the site. Smaller pools under the 35,000 litre threshold are generally exempt work, larger pools and pools on certain sites are not. Your installer will tell you plainly which side of the line your pool falls on and, where consent is needed, handle the process with you.
How long does the install take?
The on-site work is usually measured in weeks, not months, and the shell itself is set in a day once the base is ready. The variable is the ground, the access and the finishing around the pool. You get realistic dates in your quote, and we tell you if a date moves.
Can you get a pool onto a tight or sloping Christchurch section?
Usually, yes. The team has built on hills, worked behind narrow drives and dealt with limited access for years. Sometimes the answer is a smaller model, sometimes it is a crane, and sometimes it is a different position in the yard. We work that out at the site visit.
Who does the drainage around the pool?
Zach is a registered drainlayer, so it is not subcontracted. Getting the water away from the shell properly is one of the least visible and most important parts of the job, and groundwater in Christchurch makes it more important than in most places.
Can the deck and paving be done at the same time?
The building work around the pool can be planned with the pool rather than after it, which is how you avoid a finished pool sitting in a building site for months. Talk to us about what you want around it at the site visit and it can all be worked into the same plan.
How much does a pool cost?
We do not publish prices, because the honest answer depends on the model, the access, the ground and how much you want done around it. What we will do is visit, look properly, and give you a written quote that breaks the job down so you can see where the money goes.
Do you service the pool after it is installed?
We hand the pool over properly — we show you the equipment, how to run it and how to keep the water right. Ongoing servicing and water testing can be arranged locally.
What is different about buying a Bayside pool?
The shell is made in New Zealand, at the Whakatāne factory, and you are welcome to come and see it being built. You deal with one company for the shell, the warranty and the range, and one local crew for the install.
