Fibreglass Pools Tauranga & the Bay of Plenty

Built in Whakatāne — run from our own Tauranga yard

Fibreglass pool installed in a landscaped Bay of Plenty backyard

Bayside’s Bay of Plenty branch is based in Tauranga, not Whakatāne. Our yard at 30 Alach Street in Gate Pa holds the trucks, the plant and the install crew, so when we turn up on your section in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui or Papamoa we have driven across town — not over the hill. Whakatāne is where the shells are manufactured; Tauranga is where your install is run from, and you deal with the same team from the first site visit to the day you swim.

Based in Tauranga

Our yard and our crew are in Tauranga

Bayside’s Bay of Plenty branch runs out of its own yard at 30 Alach Street, Gate Pa, a few minutes from the Tauranga CBD. That is where the trucks, the excavator, the pool equipment and the install crew are based. For a Tauranga, Mount Maunganui or Papamoa job, the team arriving at your place is a Tauranga team.

Whakatāne is the factory. It is where the shells are laid up by hand, and you are welcome to come through and watch yours being built. Tauranga is the operations end: the yard your job is run out of, and the team you will talk to about your section, your quote and your install.

Areas we serve

Where we install fibreglass pools

Tauranga and the western Bay come first, because that is where our yard and crew are. From there we cover Whakatāne, Rotorua and the rest of the region — all run by the same Tauranga-based team, with the factory never far away.

About your installer

Buying direct, from a Tauranga team

Everywhere else in New Zealand a Bayside pool travels from Whakatāne to a local installer. In the Bay of Plenty we do it ourselves. Michael Corlett runs the region, the crew works out of the Tauranga yard, and the factory is a short drive away for most of the region we cover.

That changes a few things in practice. Site visits, the base, the set and the startup are handled by the same team every week, so nothing is being subcontracted to someone who has not seen the pool being built. If anything needs sorting, both the yard and the factory are close enough to go and look.

It also means the person quoting you is not guessing about what a model can and cannot do. They have watched every one of the ten models come out of the mould.

  • Tauranga yard and install crew — not a long-distance install
  • Manufactured in Whakatāne, and you can visit and see your shell being built
  • Ten fibreglass models, from a compact plunge pool to a 12 metre family pool
  • Built to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 and AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839
  • 20-year structural warranty and 15 years on osmosis

How it works

From the mould to your backyard

The sequence below is how a Tauranga or Bay of Plenty install runs. Your quote carries the actual dates for your property.

Bayside fibreglass pool model installed and filled, ready to view

1. Choose the model, see it in person

Walk the range with the person who installs it. You can come to Whakatāne and watch shells being laid up while you decide, or talk it through with the Tauranga team and look at the models before you commit.

2. Site visit, base and drainage

Our Tauranga team walks your section, works out access and levels, then digs and prepares a base built to carry the shell. Drainage around the pool is sorted while the ground is open.

3. Shell delivered and set

Your shell comes over from the factory and is set by the Tauranga crew – placed, levelled and checked against the plan, then the equipment is connected.

4. Fill, commission and handover

Backfill, filling, water balancing and a full systems check, then a walkthrough of the equipment with the team that installed it.

Questions

Tauranga and Bay of Plenty pool questions

The questions we get asked most in the Bay, answered plainly.

Where are you based in Tauranga?

Our yard is at 30 Alach Street, Gate Pa, Tauranga 3112. That is where our trucks, our plant and pool equipment are kept and where the install crew is based, so it is the yard your job is run out of. It is a working yard rather than a showroom, so visits are by arrangement – call 0800 222 974 and we will make a time.

Do you travel up from Whakatane to do the install?

No. The shell is manufactured in Whakatāne and comes over to us, but the install crew, the trucks and the gear are all based at our Tauranga yard. For a Tauranga, Mount Maunganui or Papamoa address the team working on your pool is already local.

Which part of the Bay of Plenty do you cover?

Tauranga and the western Bay first – Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, Bethlehem, Pyes Pa, Welcome Bay, Matua, Otumoetai and The Lakes, then Omokoroa, Katikati and Te Puke. We also install through Whakatāne, Ohope, Rotorua, Kawerau and Maketu, run by the same Tauranga-based team.

Can I really visit the factory and watch my pool being built?

Yes. Bayside manufactures in Whakatāne and you are welcome to come through and see the process. It is one of the genuine advantages of buying in the Bay of Plenty rather than having a shell freighted in from somewhere else.

How much does a pool cost?

We do not publish prices. The honest answer depends on the model, the access, the ground and how much you want done around the pool. We will visit, look properly and give you a written quote with the job broken down.

How long does the installation take?

The on-site work is usually measured in weeks rather than months, and the shell is set in a day once the base is ready. Fibreglass is substantially faster than concrete, and you can be swimming within a week or so of the install in straightforward cases.

Do I need building consent?

Pools under the 35,000 litre threshold are generally exempt work, but pool fencing usually requires a building consent and larger pools or tricky sites need more. We will tell you exactly where your pool sits and handle the process.

What are the shells built to?

The shells are built to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 and AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839, the Australian and New Zealand standards for fibreglass pools. They are laid up in stages – gelcoat, corrosion barrier, structural laminate, core and rib, outer seal – and inspected as they go.

Which model suits a Tauranga or Mount section?

It depends on the yard rather than the suburb. If you are close to the coast you may also want to think about wind exposure and how the salt air is handled around the equipment. We look at access, levels and the base first, then match the model to the section – a compact plunge pool for a tight Mount yard, or a 10 to 12 metre pool where there is room to move.

Do you handle tricky access on a Tauranga section?

Yes, and it is one of the things we look at before quoting. Sloping ground, tight side access, retaining, drainage and where a crane or truck can reach are all worked out at the site visit. We would rather find the problem on paper than on the day the shell arrives.

What ground conditions do you deal with around Tauranga?

The western Bay throws up a fair range – sandy coastal ground near Papamoa and the Mount, harder clay and volcanic ground further inland, and plenty of sections with a slope or a high water table. The base and drainage are specified for your ground rather than one standard dig.
