Fibreglass pool ideas for Otumoetai

Bayside Pools builds fibreglass swimming pools in Whakatāne and installs them through licensed installers around the country — and in Otumoetai the installer is us, out of the Tauranga yard. Everything below is what an Otumoetai pool buyer actually needs to decide.

Sizes are quoted as internal, water-line measurements — an 8 x 4 is 8 x 4 of water. Depth is the shell height, and capacity is measured to the top of the shell.

The photo up top

What to look at in a pool photo

That is a finished Bayside pool, and it is the best way we can show you what one looks like in a yard — it is not a photo of a section in Otumoetai. Look at how much room the pool takes out of the space around it, where the water line sits when you look out from the house, and what the yard looks like once the paving and planting are done. For an in-ground fibreglass pool in Otumoetai, those three decide it.

  1. The real size of the thing A pool looks smaller on paper than it does in a section. Use the picture to judge the length you want against the space you have — the difference between a 6.5 m and a 9 m swimming pool is obvious in a photograph and invisible in a spec sheet.
  2. One piece of water Every Bayside shell is moulded as a single piece before it leaves Whakatāne, so the pool arrives complete and the water line is continuous. Nothing is built up on site out of panels or a liner.
  3. The finishing decisions The pool is the start of the job, not the end of it. Fencing, paving or decking, and the planting around it, are what you notice in a picture of a finished yard — and they are worth deciding while the section is still open ground.

Want to see one in the ground rather than a photo of one? Bayside Pools installs right across Bay of Plenty — give them a call and ask. Every shell they set was moulded in our own factory first.

Your Otumoetai installer

Who installs a fibreglass pool in Otumoetai

Otumoetai is covered from our Tauranga yard. That is a slightly different arrangement from the rest of the country, where a Bayside shell goes to a licensed local installer: in the Bay of Plenty the two jobs sit with the same company, so the site visit, the quote, the base and the install all come out of 30 Alach Street, Gate Pa. The shell is still moulded over the hill in Whakatāne.

Yard in Tauranga

30 Alach Street, Gate Pa holds the trucks, the excavator, the pool equipment and the install crew, and Otumoetai is one of the western Bay suburbs they cover.

Buying direct

One company for the shell, the warranty and the install, with no layer between you and the people who built the pool.

The same person, start to finish

Whoever walks your section and quotes the job is on site when the shell goes in.

The ground comes first

The base and the drainage are specified for your ground rather than one standard dig, and the hole is assessed as it opens up.

If you would rather see a shell in person than on a screen, the Tauranga team will walk you through the range, and the Whakatāne factory takes visitors if you want to see shells being made. The yard itself is a working yard rather than a showroom, so visits are by arrangement.

The Otumoetai version

Picking the right fibreglass pool in Otumoetai

Most pools are bought twice: once on the idea, and once on the numbers. Getting the four things below settled in that order is what keeps an Otumoetai pool project simple.

Space on the section

Get a tape on the site before you pick a pool. The pool footprint plus the surround plus somewhere to walk is the number that matters, and it always beats the picture in your head.

How you will use it

A plunge pool for cooling off, a family pool for the kids, or a lap pool if you want to swim properly. That single answer narrows the range faster than anything else.

Getting it in

The base is prepared and the shell is set by the same team that quoted the job — so access gets worked out up front, not left to whoever turns up.

Around the pool

Fencing is the part that is not optional, and it has to comply. Everything else around the water — paving, decking, planting — is a choice, and it is what the pool ends up looking like.

Terminology

What people mean by an in-ground pool

People search for all three — in-ground pool, inground pool, swimming pool — and for a Bayside pool they mostly describe the same purchase. Here is the plain version.

In-ground pool

A pool set into the ground rather than standing above it. Every Bayside shell is designed to go in the ground, so an in-ground pool is the normal case rather than an upgrade. Where digging is not wanted, there is also a Freestanding option in the range — still a Bayside shell, sitting above ground.

Fibreglass pool

Fibreglass means the pool body is a one-piece moulded shell, made in our Whakatāne factory and delivered complete. On site the work is preparing the base, placing and setting the shell, then everything around it — rather than building the pool body itself on site.

Swimming pool

The widest of the three, and the one people type most. It covers a small plunge pool through to a 12 m family and lap pool — the difference being length, depth and how much of the section they take up.

One thing worth knowing about the sizes: the dimensions we sell are internal, water-line measurements — an 8 x 4 is 8 x 4 of water. Depth is the shell height, and capacity is measured to the top of the shell. Whether you type inground pool or in-ground pool, this is the pool that goes in the ground.

The range

The size range, smallest to largest

The smallest swimming pool shell in the fibreglass range is the 3.6 x 2.2 m Tranquil; the largest is the 12 x 4.4 m Big Bertha, with the 4 x 2.4 m Pause, 5.45 x 3.4 m Element, 6.5 x 3 m Retreat, 7 x 3.5 m Cove, 8 x 4 m Satin, 9 x 4.4 m Shoreline and 10 x 4.4 m Coastline in between. Ten models in all, all made in Whakatāne. Worth knowing before you measure: the dimensions are internal, water-line sizes — an 8 x 4 is 8 x 4 — while the shell itself takes a little more room than that, and the depth is the shell height.

Start to finish

The sequence of a pool build in Otumoetai

No two sites are the same, but the order is. This is the shape of a Bayside fibreglass pool install.

  1. Site visit — assess the section, the access and the position. This is the step that prevents surprises later.
  2. Design and price — the model suited to the section, with a written quote you can read line by line.
  3. Manufacture in Whakatāne — one-piece fibreglass shell, built here rather than imported complete.
  4. Excavate and prepare the base — the part that is invisible afterwards, and the part that matters most.
  5. Set the shell and backfill — placed, levelled and set in.
  6. Fill, commission, hand over — the pool running, and the handbook with it.

Excavation and shell placement are quick. What takes the time is everything after: filling, surrounds, fencing and getting the water balanced.

Year one

Once the pool is in

Once the pool is in, the job is mostly the water. Balanced water and sensible use of the equipment is what keeps the surface and the gear healthy, and the maintenance page covers the routine.

Questions

Questions about a pool in Otumoetai

What does a swimming pool cost in Otumoetai?

It depends on the model, the size, how easily the shell reaches your section, and what you put around the pool — those four things move the number more than anything else. We do not quote a figure without seeing the site, because a wrong number wastes your time and ours. The pool cost guide carries the bands our own written quotes run across; your installer writes the actual price for your section. Send us your section and you will get a written quote for it.

How big a pool fits in Otumoetai?

That is a question about your section, not about Otumoetai in general — the clear space is what decides it. The fibreglass swimming pool range starts at the 3.6 x 2.2 m Tranquil plunge pool and runs to the 12 x 4.4 m Big Bertha, with ten models in between. A tight section usually ends up at a plunge or compact model; a section with room usually takes a 7 to 8 metre family pool. Worth remembering that our sizes are internal, water-line measurements, so an 8 x 4 pool gives you 8 x 4 of water, and the shell needs a little more space than that.

Is a building consent required for a pool in Otumoetai?

Pool fencing is the part that is not optional. It has to comply with the building code, and it is checked — that applies to any pool in Otumoetai, whether the pool itself needed a consent or not. Depending on the section, a resource or building consent may also come into it. We work through that as part of the job rather than leaving you to work it out, and the fencing sits outside the pool price, so ask for it to be shown on the quote.

How long does a pool installation take?

The excavation and the shell placement are the quick part — usually a few days once the team is on site. What takes the time is what comes after: filling, surrounds, fencing and getting the water balanced. You get a realistic sequence up front rather than just the fast part, so you can plan the garden and the fencing around it.

Which Bayside model should I look at first?

It follows the sections rather than the postcode. Where space is tight, the plunge and compact models win — the Tranquil, the Pause and the Element. Where there is room, a 7 to 8 metre family pool is the usual pick, which is the Retreat, the Cove or the Satin. The whole range with its dimensions is on the pool range page if you want to see the sizes side by side before you ring anyone.

Do you cover Otumoetai?

Yes. Otumoetai is covered from our own yard at 30 Alach Street, Gate Pa in Tauranga. In most of the country a Bayside shell is installed by a licensed local installer; in the Bay of Plenty we install it ourselves, so the team that walks your section, quotes the job and sets the shell is our crew, and the shell itself is moulded in our Whakatāne factory.

Is a fibreglass pool an in-ground pool?

Yes — a Bayside shell is designed to be set into the ground, so an in-ground pool is the standard case rather than a special order. The range also includes a Freestanding option for a section where digging is not wanted; it is the same shell family, sitting above ground.

How does a fibreglass shell compare with other pool types?

The shell arrives as one finished piece rather than being built up on site, so the on-site work is preparing the base, placing and setting it, and everything around the water. That is also why the surface matters so much: ours is ChlorShield, the gelcoat system on every Bayside shell, and the ChlorShield page sets out what it is built to do. We will talk about any pool type with you — we just sell the one we manufacture.

How do I choose a pool colour?

Get the colour right before the shell is ordered, not after. The pool colours page shows the palette on real pools, and you can ask to see a colour in person — the light a pool sits in changes how a colour reads.

Can I see a pool before I commit?

Yes. The Tauranga team will walk you through the range, and if you want to see the shells being made the Whakatāne factory takes visitors. The yard at 30 Alach Street, Gate Pa is a working yard rather than a showroom, so visits are by arrangement — call 0800 222 974 and we will make a time.
