Retreat 6.5m × 3.0m Fibreglass Pool
A modern escape designed for laid-back living.

Retreat is the Bayside model built around a long summer: 6.5 metres of usable water and a floor that runs full depth, from 1.31 m at the shallow end through to 1.34 m in the deep end (shell heights). Wide steps at the shallow end ease you in, stairs enter from either side, and two corner seats in the deep end give the grown-ups somewhere to sit while the kids work out who can jump the furthest. At approximately 25,650 litres it sits under the 35,000 litre consent threshold, and its slimline 3.0 m width still fits a normal backyard.
Bring on the Long Summer
Retreat is the family staycation pool — room to actually swim, and a deep end built for jumping.

Room to Move
An expansive 6.5 m length gives plenty of room to swim, jump and float — and because the floor runs full depth, the whole pool is usable water rather than a shallow shelf you wade across.

Easy Entry
Wide steps at the shallow end, plus stairs entering either side. You walk in rather than climb down, and the deep end stays clear of obstacles for whoever goes in next.

Two Corner Seats
Two moulded corner seats in the deep end — the quiet end of the pool, and the best seat in the backyard once the afternoon sun swings around.

Retreat — Built Around the Long Lunch
Retreat was drawn for staycation summers: breakfast on the deck, everyone in the water by ten, and nobody dry until the sausages are done. The 6.5 m length keeps the swim line clear from end to end, so you can put some laps in before the kids take over, and the two corner seats in the deep end keep the adults in the water rather than perched on the edge with a towel. At 3.0 m wide it slips into a normal backyard and still leaves room for the lawn, the garden and whatever the kids have claimed as theirs.

Under 35,000 Litres — No Building Consent, No PS1
At approximately 25,650 litres the Retreat sits below the 35,000 litre threshold, and that changes what the paperwork looks like.
Exempt work under Schedule 1 — no building consent
Below 35,000 litres means the Retreat is exempt work under Schedule 1 of the Building Act. There is no building consent to apply for and no Producer Statement to chase, so the time between deciding and swimming is mostly the dig. Exempt from consent is not exempt from standard. Every Retreat shell is manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838, the design and fabrication standard for premoulded fibreglass swimming pools, and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839. It is the same shell we would build for a consented job. Pool fencing requirements still apply (Building Code clause F9), and your local installer will walk you through the fence rules for your property.
A standard excavation is included — everything else is priced off your site
The supply and installation of the Retreat shell includes back-filling, and the backfill is supplied, subject to standard pool excavation. Works that fall outside that standard scope are quoted separately: special landscaping requests, raising or lowering ground levels, preparing grounds for concrete, topsoil and ready-lawn preparation, removing trees inside the proposed pool area, relocating underground obstructions such as stormwater, soakrings or wiring, and removal of rubbish or unwanted items around the pool area. Your local installer prices your property before anything is committed, so there are no surprises once the digger arrives.
Delivery and machinery access
Your shell is delivered to the bottom of your driveway on the back of a large truck. If the site needs cranes, hiabs or other lifting gear, that is arranged by you, along with the machinery to lift the shell off the truck — your installer will tell you early on whether your access is straightforward. We are careful with driveways and property, but there is a truck and a crane on the job, and heavy gear can mark a drive. Tell us early what your access is like and we will plan the lift around it.

Retreat Frequently Asked Questions
The practical answers, and a few you were actually wondering about.
What is the house record for the biggest bomb?
Officially we do not keep one; unofficially every family does. The deep end measures 1.34 m from the top of the shell to the base, which is a proper jumping depth for confident swimmers — and the deep end is kept clear of obstacles, so nobody lands on a step. Treat it as a jumping pool rather than a diving pool: never dive head-first into 1.34 m.
Who gets the corner seats?
There are two corner seats moulded into the deep end, so it is a short argument. They are the warmest spot in the pool on a still afternoon, and the only seat in the backyard where nobody can walk in front of you. If three people want them, somebody is swimming.
Will a lilo and a Labrador both fit?
Comfortably. At 6.5 m long and 3.0 m wide, with a floor that runs full depth end to end, a 1.8 m lilo floats lengthways with room to spare and there is no shallow shelf to beach yourself on. The Labrador is on its own for nails — keep them trimmed, and rinse the shell afterwards.
Is this a lap pool, or a really big bath?
Neither, exactly. The floor runs a full depth — 1.31 m at the shallow end through to 1.34 m in the deep end — so nearly all 6.5 m is water you can swim in rather than a shelf you wade across. That is enough to swim properly and turn, but it is not a 12 m training lane. Most owners call it the pool they actually use every day.
Does the Retreat need building consent?
No. At approximately 25,650 litres the Retreat is under the 35,000 litre threshold, so it is exempt work under Schedule 1 of the Building Act — no building consent, no Producer Statement, and no engineering paperwork to chase. It is still manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839, and pool fencing requirements still apply.
How deep is the Retreat?
1.31 m at the shallow end through to 1.34 m in the deep end. Bayside publishes depth as shell height — measured on the shell itself, top of the shell down to the base — so the figure matches the engineering drawing and your specification sheet rather than a modelled water line.
How much water does it hold?
Approximately 25,650 litres. That is a full family volume without being so much that heating it becomes a project — and keeping the Retreat below 35,000 litres is what removes the consent process from your build.
How do you get in and out?
Wide steps at the shallow end, plus stairs entering either side. You walk in rather than climb down, which matters more than people expect when you are carrying a toddler, a towel or a drink — and because the entry is at the shallow end, the deep end stays clear for jumping.
Will it fit my backyard?
At 6.5 m long and only 3.0 m wide the Retreat fits most backyards, including the long narrow ones. You need enough room for the setbacks and fencing the law requires, plus machinery access to dig. Send us photos or measurements and we will tell you honestly whether it fits — including whether the digger can get in.
What can change on my site?
A standard dig-out is included in your quote. Beyond that, what varies is your ground: how easily machinery reaches the backyard, how far excavated fill has to be trucked, whether stormwater or services are in the way, and whether the shell needs craning over a fence or the house. Your local installer prices your property before anything is committed, so the figure you agree up front is the figure you pay.
How much does it cost to heat?
Running cost depends on your cover, your temperature setting and how long your season is, so we will not put a number on it here — and pricing varies by region anyway. The volume works in the Retreat’s favour: our quotation templates size a 12 kW heat pump for the 6.5 m Retreat, and it runs in three modes (Max, Eco, Silent) with app control.
What maintenance does it need?
The smooth fibreglass surface is easy to look after, and a Stanley Delux cleaning kit comes with the package — flexy brush, deluxe vacuum, aluminium leaf rake, 4.9 m pole, hose, thermometer and test strips. Add Q360 in-floor cleaning and most of the routine disappears, and a mineral sanitiser system such as Naked can cut the chlorine routine right back.
What standard are Bayside pools built to?
Every Bayside shell is manufactured to AS 1838 / NZS AS 1838 — Swimming pools: premoulded fibre-reinforced plastics, design and fabrication — and installed to AS 1839 / NZS AS 1839. Those standards set out what a fibreglass shell has to be: the layers it is built from, the loads it has to carry, and the curing and defect requirements before it leaves the factory. Sitting under the consent threshold changes the paperwork, not the shell.
How is the shell actually built?
In layers, by hand, and every one of them has a job. From the water out: the gelcoat, the coloured surface you swim against; the corrosion barrier, a resin-rich layer that keeps water out of the laminate and stops osmotic blistering; the structural glass laminate that carries the load and holds the shape; core and rib reinforcement, which stiffens the walls and the top flange; and an outer sealing coat against ground moisture. The swimming surface is finished with ChlorShield, our chemical-resistant surface technology.
How do you know my pool was built right?
The shell is inspected and signed off at each stage — lay-up, curing, gelcoat and finish — and tracked through the build, so if we need to look anything up about your pool in five years we can. Production data including batch numbers, amounts used and thickness sprayed at each layer is recorded against it. If you want the layer specification for the Retreat in writing, ask and we will put it in your file.
Where We Install the Retreat
Bayside pools are installed through a nationwide dealer network. Ask about the dealer in your region.
Auckland
Auckland is a city of tight sections, cross-leases and access that was never designed for a digger. A 6.5 m Retreat still gives you the full 6.5 m swim line, and because the floor runs full depth there is no shallow wading shelf eating the length you paid for. Our installers work the tighter suburbs with smaller machines.
Tauranga & Bay of Plenty
Proudly manufactured just down the road in Whakatane, and one of the models we install most around Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and the wider Bay of Plenty. Long coastal summers are exactly what the Retreat was drawn for — and you are close enough to visit the factory and watch your shell come out of the mould.
Hamilton & the Waikato
Waikato sections generally have the room for a 6.5 m pool, and 25,650 litres is a volume that heats readily through a Waikato winter — the 12 kW heat pump we size for this model brings it up to temperature without working hard. Real swimming water, without a full-size pool’s running costs.
Wellington
Wellington brings wind, tight access and hillside sites. The Retreat’s slimline 3.0 m width and manageable shell make it one of the easier models to get onto a difficult section, and our installers use smaller diggers and cranes where the access demands it.
Christchurch & Canterbury
We deliver to the South Island, including the ferry run, so a Retreat arrives exactly as it left the factory and is installed by Canterbury installers who know the logistics. Big sections and a short, intense season suit it: 25,650 litres comes up to temperature fast once the nor’wester finally arrives.
Northland & Kerikeri
The Far North is bach country. A 6.5 × 3.0 m Retreat suits a coastal section or a lifestyle block, and coastal air, heavier clay soils and access that is not always simple are all things a fibreglass shell handles without drama.
Hawke’s Bay & Napier
Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau and the surrounding district get long, dry summers made for outdoor living. Retreat’s full-depth floor means there is no wading shelf taking up half the pool, so all 6.5 m stays in play for the whole season rather than a corner of it.
Gisborne & the East Coast
Gisborne and the East Coast / Tairāwhiti deliver some of the country’s best swimming weather on some of its harder-to-reach sections. Delivery is coordinated from the factory, and a 3.0 m wide shell keeps the Retreat workable where the route in is tight.
South Auckland
Manukau, Papakura, Pukekohe and the wider Counties area are full of infill and cross-lease sections with small yards. A 6.5 m pool that is only 3.0 m wide is the shape that fits those sites, and the full-depth floor means you are not giving up swim water to get it in.
