Looking After the Surface
The Surface System
- Chemical-Ready – Designed to resist the toughest pool chemicals without fading, chalking, or surface breakdown
- UV Armour – Shields your pool from New Zealand’s powerful sun, locking in colour and gloss
- Impact Tough – Flexible strength that resists cracking and stress damage
We’ve tested ChlorShield™ far beyond normal pool use – exposing it to extreme chlorine, high pH, and elevated temperatures.
Even after this intense treatment, ChlorShield™ stayed bright, glossy, and intact
What Is Not Covered
The finish against discoloration, staining, fading, hairline cracks, surface roughness or surface yellowing.
The finish against calcium scale, whitening or mineral deposits on the surface of the pool.
What Keeps It Right
A fibreglass shell is smooth, non-porous and inert. It does not leach minerals into the water the way concrete does, so pH stays steadier, and algae and bacteria have far less to grip.
Use a soft nylon brush; never a steel or abrasive one on a gelcoat finish.
High calcium together with high pH is the single biggest cause of a dull, discoloured or scaled gelcoat on a fibreglass pool. Keep calcium toward the low end of the range and keep pH in check.
Every couple of months — wipe the waterline. Sunscreen and body oils leave a greasy film that stains if it is left to sit.
Sunscreen is acidic, comes off in the water, clouds it, and leaves a residue on the waterline that stains if it is left. Apply it 30–45 minutes before swimming, not at the pool edge.
When Something Looks Wrong
Dull or chalky gelcoat
Long-term high pH and calcium, or cleaning with something abrasive.
Water test, pH down, and stop using anything abrasive — a soft brush only, ever.
White spots or scale on the surface
High pH combined with high calcium. On a fibreglass pool this is the classic pair to avoid.
Get the water professionally tested, bring pH down, and ask about a stain and scale control product. Do not scrub at it.
The One Thing Never To Do
The one thing never to do: never empty a fibreglass pool without advice.
A full shell is a heavy, supported shell. Take the water out and you remove the weight holding it in the ground — which is when ground water can lift or distort it.
Keep the water level above the skimmer outlet at all times for the same reason. Both of these are conditions of your pool warranty, and both are expensive to get wrong.
